Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely researched and effective approaches for concerns such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, and self-esteem challenges. At Garden of Wellness Psychotherapy, we use CBT to help you explore the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and to develop practical strategies for creating meaningful change in your daily life.

CBT is collaborative, structured, and goal-oriented. Together, we work at a pace that feels right for you, focusing on building both insight and skills you can use beyond therapy.

Identifying Thoughts and Beliefs

CBT starts with noticing the automatic thoughts, assumptions, and core beliefs that influence how you feel and act. These patterns often show up as cognitive distortions (s.a., catastrophizing, black-and-white thinking, or mind-reading) that can keep you stuck. By bringing awareness to these thought patterns, you can begin to challenge and reframe them in ways that are more balanced and supportive.

Building Skills and Coping Strategies

CBT is skills-based and practical. In session, we work on strategies such as cognitive restructuring, problem-solving, exposure techniques, relaxation skills, and mindfulness practices. Between sessions, you’ll be encouraged to practice these tools in real-life situations, helping you strengthen coping skills and gain confidence in managing difficult emotions or situations.

Behavioural Change and Practice

Lasting change in CBT happens through behavioural experiments and gradual practice. This might involve testing out new ways of responding, gradually facing situations you’ve been avoiding, or replacing unhelpful habits with healthier ones. These action steps, taken at your pace, create opportunities to break old cycles and reinforce new patterns that align with your goals and values.

Is CBT Right for Me?

CBT is a flexible, evidence-based approach that can be tailored to your unique situation. Whether you’re struggling with anxious thoughts, low mood, self-doubt, or feeling stuck in unhelpful patterns, CBT offers both structure and adaptability. Many clients appreciate that it provides practical strategies for the here-and-now while also addressing deeper patterns that impact their well-being.

At Garden of Wellness, our therapists often take an eclectic or integrative approach, which means your therapy isn’t limited to just one method. If you’re curious about CBT, your therapist can thoughtfully incorporate elements such as psychoeducation, coping skills training, or structured exercises into your sessions. This way, you can benefit from CBT techniques while also exploring other approaches that support your unique needs, values, and goals.
