Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based, integrative approach that helps you live a meaningful life, even when faced with difficult thoughts or emotions. Rather than trying to eliminate discomfort, ACT teaches you to accept your experiences, clarify your values, and take committed action. At Garden of Wellness Psychotherapy, we use ACT to support clients in building psychological flexibility, resilience, and a deeper connection to what matters most.

Acceptance & Mindfulness

ACT emphasizes being present with your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Through mindfulness practices and acceptance strategies, you can learn to observe difficult emotions and thoughts without letting them dictate your actions. This approach helps reduce struggle and promotes a sense of calm, clarity, and self-compassion.

Values and Committed Action

A central part of ACT is clarifying what truly matters to you (your values) and taking committed, practical steps aligned with them. Together, we explore what gives your life meaning and support you in making choices and engaging in behaviours that reflect those values, even when challenges arise.

Cognitive Flexibility

ACT helps you notice unhelpful thought patterns and shift your relationship with them, a process called cognitive defusion. Rather than fighting or avoiding thoughts, you learn to step back, gain perspective, and respond in ways that support your goals and well-being. This builds resilience, confidence, and adaptive coping skills.

Is ACT Right for Me?

ACT can be helpful if you feel stuck, struggle with anxiety, depression, self-criticism, or avoidance, or want to live more intentionally in line with your values. At Garden of Wellness Psychotherapy, we often take an eclectic or integrative approach. Your therapist can incorporate ACT strategies such as mindfulness exercises, values exploration, and acceptance-based skills alongside other evidence-based approaches to meet your unique needs.
